Although some of the hardest-hit states are beginning to report fewer new infections, Thanksgiving travel and gatherings could reverse that trend. Even after cases peak, deaths will continue rising for several weeks.
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte is calling for Italians not to ski over next month’s Christmas holidays — and requesting neighboring European countries to agree upon shared ski rules — as Europe grapples with its latest surge in coronavirus cases.

Italy cannot plan “to allow holidays on the snow,” Conte said. “We cannot afford it.”
He told Italian TV station La7 that he has spoken to French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel about how they can design a “shared protocol” to avoid spreading contagion.
“I think it is a European problem,” he said, according to Reuters. “If Italy decided to shut down all its ski lifts without any support from France, Austria and the other countries, then Italian tourists would risk going abroad and taking the contagion back home.”

His stance has evoked anger among the many Italians living in ski regions who rely on business during a normally busy holiday season — and who will be particularly reliant on that income this year amid the global economic downturn due to the pandemic. The country’s ski resorts typically rake in several billion dollars in the days around Christmas and New Year’s alone, Reuters reported.
The country’s regions that rely on the ski business are proposing to the central government that mountains remain open for skiing but that strict social distancing rules be implemented, including limits on how many passes are sold and how many people are allowed on ski lifts at once.

But in his comments late Monday, Conte seemed reluctant to accept that restrictions would do enough to slow the spread of the virus.
“The protocol is one thing, but everything that revolves around holidays on the snow is uncontrollable,” Conte told Italy’s La7 television station.

Earlier this year, the Austrian state of Tyrol — a popular skiing destination in the Alps — announced that skiing would not be canceled this year, but that post-ski festivities known as “après-ski” would be. At least four civil lawsuits have been filed against Austrian officials, blaming post-ski activities for large coronavirus outbreaks.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) offered a smug prediction four months ago. Those efforts to contain the coronavirus that has now killed more than 250,000 in the United States? Just political opportunism, he said.

“I guarantee you the week after the election, suddenly all those Democratic governors, all of those Democratic mayors will say, ‘Everything’s magically better. Go back to work, go back to school,’ ” Cruz said during a television interview.
On July 22, when Cruz offered his assessment, the country was near the peak of its second surge in new coronavirus infections. In the wake of the election, Democratic governors and mayors didn’t scale back containment efforts. For one thing, there weren’t many such efforts in place. But the more important factor was that the new surge was already underway.
